Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
Once upon a time, there was a liar in a village. He always deceived the villagers. The villagers discussed, "We should drive him out of our village so that we will be safe." They suggested, "Let's clean the field." They called everyone to clean the field, and they made the liar work in the middle of the field so he would not slack. However, the liar was clever and knew that they were plotting something. He was thinking about how to survive, so he secretly dug a big hole. After they had cleaned the field, the villagers said, "Let's burn the field. You have to burn the area you have cleaned." The liar said, "Okay." Then he walked to the middle of the field. As soon as he went there, the villagers started burning the whole field. Then he quickly went into the hole he had dug earlier. The villagers said, "That liar must be dead now. We burn him." They thought he died. Not long after, the liar walked toward them. They asked him, "How did you survive? Where were you hiding?" He answered, "I was just there, enjoying myself." He survived because of his cleverness. The villagers later discussed again, "We should kill him anyway." They plotted again. Then they prepared a watchtower in a tree above a big river, similar to the one we use during the Manau festival. The liar was talented at singing, so the villagers said to him, "Climb up there and entertain us." They leaned a ladder against the tree for him to climb. When he was on the tower, they removed the ladder. He couldn't climb down anymore. He just kept playing music there. Soon, a group of men who traded buffaloes arrived there. They loved listening to his music and asked him, "Who are you?" He answered, "I am the wise man. If you want to learn this music skill, come up here. I can teach you. I have all the instruments." They said, "That's good. Let's climb up there." He said, "Great. Come up. There is a ladder. Use it and climb up here." He tried to persuade them with nice words. They said, "We will climb up there because you are so willing to teach us." They tied their buffaloes near there and climbed up the tree. When they arrived there, they found it really interesting because there were many different instruments. While they were learning, the man said, "Keep practicing here. Let me climb down for a while." When he was on the ground, he put the ladder away, took all the buffaloes, and went away into the forest. At that moment, the villagers said, "Let's go check on the liar. He must be starving and dead by now." Then they went there and cut down the tower they had built. It sank into the water, and all the people on it drowned. They said, "Now everything is done. He escaped due to his cleverness last time, but now he is finished." They held the Manau festival to celebrate the liar's death. At that time, the liar appeared there with a herd of buffaloes. The villagers were surprised and said, "We thought you were dead. Where did you get these buffaloes?" He said, "There are a lot of buffaloes in the river. I can't even take them all." They greedily said, "Show us where to get them." He said, "Of course. I can take you there if you want." He plotted against them and made them drown in the water. All the villagers who tired to kill him died in the water. He became rich and survived the dangers due to his cleverness. This is the end of the story.
